Malia Bruker is an Assistant Professor in the School of Communication at Florida State University, and she is also the director of "Chase" the film we profile in this show of Media Makers. While the film "Chase" began production in 2009 and was only release six years ago, the premise, technology, and storytelling are incredibly relevant during our societies pandemic isolation. On this episode, we dive deep into the storytelling, themes, motivations, and goals of this incredible short film and relate to today's realities. We also spoke about the incredible program offered at Florida State University for students to explore non-fiction filmmaking, such as documentaries, as well as a robust sports media program for students to cover Seminole sports hands-on.

Malia has produced a number of other film you can watch here:
Alluvium (2018) HD video, documentary, TRT 10:48
Role: Director, Cinematographer, Editor, Producer
Link: https://vimeo.com/240765613
Password: site specific
  • Synopsis: The rolling hills and ancient villages of Tuscany provide the backdrop for Alluvium, both an experimental documentary about art-making and a piece of art in itself. As artists from across Italy gather to create work in and inspired by the Tuscan landscape, Alluvium observes their praxis, then quietly drifts into its own. The stunning cinematography makes magic of the process of finding inspiration, slipping between reality and illusion, observation and performance.
Sakhi (2018) HD video, documentary, TRT 6:15
Role: Director, Cinematographer, Editor
Link: https://vimeo.com/250894021
  • Password: Hamburg
  • Synopsis: In a metal container that sleeps four men, Sakhi Poya serves green tea. Though rarely entered by German citizens, Harburger Postrasse Refugee Housing is the first stop for thousands who flee their war-torn and economically ravaged homelands in search of stability and safety in Hamburg. In the quiet fluorescence of his new home, Sakhi recounts his harrowing journey from Afghanistan, revealing fears, frustrations and dreams of an ordinary life. Despite his simple and spare surroundings, Sakhi’s rich visions for the future and his role in society build a subtle but powerful portrait of the modern refugee experience.
Klasse (2105) HD video, dance film, TRT 9:16
Role: Director, Editor
  • Link: https://vimeo.com/152655410
  • Synopsis: Klasse is a narrative dance film that tracks back to the winter of 1938 in Jewish Hamburg, Germany at the height of WWII. In an old school classroom kept just as it was during the war, an intimate cast of German middle school students and professional dancers brings to life a year of letters written between young classmates as they left one by one on the Kindertransport. Klasse captures what it feels like to be heroic at age twelve both then and now, as the contemporary classroom reflects Europe’s continuously shifting demographics.
